Here are the last photos from that trip to St. Georges. As you can see the streets are very narrow. What you can't see are the many many pot holes, random spots of lumpy concrete that probably fell off a cement truck and no one bothered to clean up, and how slanted the road is because people park on one side so you have lean into the gutter on the other side to avoid hitting them! But it's fine if you're walking ... and you don't mind being on a sidewalk that only allows you to walk single file with the occasional drop into the sewer. One of these days I want to go around and put together a collection of pictures of all the destroyed buildings from Ivan. They're so interesting to me. It's even more interesting because they keep building new buildings. They cut into the mountain and build new homes, but then you drive around and you see all these broken down buildings. It makes me wonder what it really looks like in Katrina. Ivan happened only a year before Katrina and the island wasn't hit nearly as badly. I would just like to go to New Orleans to compare the clean up that's been done. Jayson made an interesting comment the other day. He said that the homes you see that are destroyed are often only missing a roof. All the walls are still standing. It makes you wonder why people didn't just get another roof. Surely that's a lot more affordable than trying to rebuild an entire house! Just a few thoughts.
I really enjoy walking around the city and finding all these random stores. They seriously remind me of dollar stores. They carry a little of everything and all of it's crap. But it's crap you need. And every once and a while you really find something that's worth keeping. I love our bread pans that we found down town. And then there are the Carib T-shirts!! Carib is the beer down here. Which, I might add, they preserve with formaldehyde. Yes, they really do.
It's a weird feeling to see these pictures and realize this is where we live. They just look like pictures of a foreign country, but it's home at the moment. Just weird.
